Meet the Experts:

  • Marlene Anzaldua (@stilett0b0ss_) is a freelance fashion stylist with over 11 years in the fashion business. She has credits in InStyle, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, Bustle, Forbes and more.
  • Dr. Isaac Tabari, founding director of New York City Podiatry Center of Excellence, is a board-certified podiatrist/foot doctor with extensive experience in sports and dance, foot & ankle trauma, diabetic foot care, pediatric foot disorders and foot surgery. He practices in NYC.

Do Podiatrists Recommend Clogs?

While Dr. Tabari is wary of the more traditional, fully wooden-soled clogs, he does recommend modern clogs that are made with proper arch support and shock absorption.

Arch support is especially key, says Dr. Tabari, and also making sure that the clogs you choose are wide enough in the toe box to provide room for adequate movement. And while we love the soft, cushy feel of rubber clogs, he cautions us to save these for shorter walks, as they promote hypermobility, which could cause foot injuries.

Are Clogs in Style for 2024?

Happily, yes! Anzaldua assures us that they have been spotted throughout fashion month across the globe because they make an aesthetically pleasing shoe option when the weather isn't cold enough for boots. The key is keeping proportions in mind, since the shoe can be bulky, she says. Flat clogs often look better with shorts or above-the-knee skirts, whereas a cropped jean or longer pants tend to be more flattering with heeled clogs.

How We Chose the Most Comfortable Clogs

Keeping in mind Dr. Tabari’s expert recommendation for arch support and toe mobility, we took care to include styles that keep your foot secure while giving your toes room to wiggle. We also vetted them based on overall reviews and editor recommendations for comfort and quality.

What We Like

  • convertible strap

What We Don't Like

  • some reviewers say sizing is inconsistent

J.Crew

If you’re looking for a clog that has a little extra something, but still goes with everything, look no further. These clogs are “super comfy” (according to several reviews), due to their cushioned insole. The convertible strap means you can wear them around the ankle for extra support, or flipped to the top for easy slipping on and off. The bold metallic studs along the outside add some extra flair, but the overall look is still classic.

What We Don't Like

Beek

While we love clogs for their slip-on construction, the open back does leave your heel open to the elements. On colder days, you can still reach for your favorite clogs when they’re cozily shearling-lined however, like this handmade pair. While these are on the expensive side, they’re meant to be worn for a lifetime, and will only get more comfortable with each wear. Beek is also committed to fighting childhood hunger, and donates a day’s worth of meals to a child in need for each pair sold.

Everlane

The comfort of a clog in a sleek, all-leather package, this shoe is as comfy as it is stylish. While the padding-covered wedge sole does have some height, one reviewer says they’re great for “feeling very stable” while walking (no teetering here!), and the rubber outsole helps to cushion every step.

We love the subtle two-tone wooden platform, adding a little visual interest to this timeless style.

What is “Microwobbleboard Technology,” you ask? Even if you didn’t, we’re here to tell you, as these super comfortable clogs deserve your attention. Created by two biomechanics in 2007, Microwobbleboard Technology works to absorb the shock of your foot strike while diffusing underfoot pressure by instantly increasing the contact area of the foot to the midsole. Long story short—these clogs are comfortable from the beginning of the day to the end, especially if you work on your feet. Slip-resistant and given the seal of approval by the American Podiatric Medical Association, they're supportive and wearable even on your most active days.

Universal Thread

These clogs have the look of leather but will cost you less than a week's worth of lattes, making them a no-brainer to add to your wardrobe. (You'll definitely get more than a week's use from this little treat.) Some reviewers say they run narrow, and recommend sizing up a half size, but once you do, they’re “very comfortable” and “cute for such a good price.” The memory foam insole will support you all day long, and for this price you can feel good about getting that coffee on your next Target run as well.

These lightweight, cushiony clogs are like a rubber dupe of the beloved Birkenstock Bostons (see below), and are equally beloved. “After putting them on I didn’t want to wear anything else,” reads one of the 1,700 five-star reviews, and we can see why. The upper strap lets you adjust the fit as needed for a customizable fit, and the arch support is excellent, especially at this price point. If you’re between sizes, we suggest you size down for the perfect fit.

Like athleisure for your feet, these cozy, shearling-lined clogs will make you feel like you’re wearing your favorite slippers while running errands. And, as one of Marlene’s picks, we know they’re stylist-approved as well. Crafted in soft suede and lined with warm shearling, you’ll be able to wear this pair into the winter months. The upper strap adjusts the fit so you can wear them with or without socks, weather depending.

What We Like

What We Don't Like

  • insole isn’t padded

MIA

Come springtime, you might want a clog with a bit more breathability. This sandal style is ideal. Reviewers say they’re “very comfortable right out of the box,” but as they only come in whole sizes you’ll want to size up for the best fit. The closed toe means you can wear them with socks or tights on chillier days, and the 2 1/2-inch platform heel adds height without putting your foot at a toe-crunching angle.

  • Material: leather upper, wooden sole
  • Size Range: 5 to 11

11. Nisolo Leather Platform Clogs

What We Like

  • made with sustainable practices

What We Don't Like

  • heel height may be a little high for comfort for some

Nisolo

One reviewer says “These wooden and leather clogs are a sight to behold,” and we couldn’t have said it better ourselves. They're sleek, with a slightly higher heel than some on this list (however reviewers agree that they don’t sacrifice comfort for style). Plus, the clogs are made of at least 50 percent leather sourced from a tannery that has achieved a Leather Working Group Silver rating for energy use, waste production and water treatment. Pretty cool, huh?

  • ergonomic sole

What We Don't Like

Swedish Hasbeens

These clog booties may be an investment, but we can assure you they’re one you won’t regret making. Perfect to take you from autumn through winter (and even into spring with a cute sundress), these retro booties are both unique and classic. The ergonomic sole is crafted from a single piece of wood that’ll keep your feet comfortable for long wears, and while reviewers say the leather needs to be broken in, you’ll have a practically bespoke pair of booties once you do.

Best Podiatrist-Approved Clog

13. Dansko Leather Professional Clogs

What We Like

  • available in narrow and wide widths

What We Don't Like

  • some reviewers say they scuff easily

Dansko

Dr. Tabari’s pick (and the APMA’s) for clog lovers is also one of the highest-rated styles on the market, and for good reason. The support is legendary, while the roomy toe box gives your toes room to move freely. These clogs are the shoe of choice for many buyers who work on their feet for long hours. That being said, as they’re available in colors from classic black all the way to “mermaid patent” and every color/pattern in between, these shoes are anything but basic workhorses.

14. Charlotte Stone Leather Molly Clogs

What We Like

What We Don't Like

Charlotte Stone

If you’ve been following fashion week, you’ll know that the Mary Jane has made a comeback. We love the look for its retro appeal, however the t-strap construction also offers extra support when walking. These fun platform clogs are, according to reviewers, lightweight despite their supportive wide heel, making the 3-inch platform a breeze to walk in. Whether you choose the vibrant chartreuse color or the rich tan, you’ll get wear out of these from early fall through winter.

Best Rainwear Clogs

15. Hunter Garden Clogs

What We Like

  • easy to clean

What We Don't Like

  • limited size range

Hunter

You might already have a pair of Hunter rain boots in your closet, but for days that are more drizzle than downpour, these clogs are your best bet. The neoprene lining adds a comfy touch, and reviewers say they are “easy to slip on, sturdy and comfortable.” This clog is full of stylish details, from the embossed pattern along the opening, and pops of contrasting colors throughout. This may be a clog you reach for if you’re into gardening, but you won’t feel like a farmer if you choose to throw them on for errands as well.

16. Birkenstock Suede Boston Clogs

What We Like

  • comfort increases with each wear

What We Don't Like

  • limited size range

Birkenstock

We love Birkenstock sandals in summer, so couldn’t be happier that there’s a way to wear them into the fall. These clogs only get better over time, as the soles are engineered to mold to the shape of your foot with wear. From the arch support, to the deep heel cup and toe indentations, this shoe is designed for maximum comfort. The soft suede upper can be buckled to fit perfectly, but we suggest consulting the Birkenstock size guide to ensure you get the perfect fit in these fall wardrobe staples.

17. Crocs Starry Glitter Clogs

What We Like

  • customizable charms

What We Don't Like

  • not for long distance walking

Crocs

From celebrity chefs to your favorite influencers, we’re sure you’ve spotted these distinctive clogs out in the world. If you’ve never tried them yourself, this fall is the time to change that. These could be the lightest shoes we’ve tried, weighing only ounces, and are super breathable despite being made of synthetic materials due to the ventilation holes throughout the upper. If you’d prefer to use those holes to create a unique look all your own, these clogs can be customized with up to 26 charms. We love the glittery star print of this version, but solid versions in every color imaginable are available if that’s more your vibe. Looks aside, the cushy feel of these clogs will keep you comfy on your feet for hours.

18. Ugg Maxi Clogs

What We Like

  • toggle closure to hold in warmth

What We Don't Like

  • some reviewers say they look large on

Ugg

Like a puffer jacket for your feet, these insulated clogs will help you survive even the chilliest days. Lined with a wool and lyocell blend, they're just as comfy with or without socks, and the toggle closure at the top will lock in heat and keep out the chill. While they might look a little oversized on, you won’t mind when you feel their cozy softness. One reviewer calls them “a wonderful bright spot on a gloomy day,” which is just what we need when temps begin to dip.

While these clogs are definitely more fashion than function, they’re surprisingly comfortable for the height, given the substantial front platform and soft, faux-shearling lining.
