Because there's more to this trend than just Birkenstock Bostons, people.
There’s no denying clogs have been on trend for more than a hot minute. But despite many a season in the spotlight, the appeal of these wooden shoes shows no sign of abating in 2023.
Once reserved for Dutch farmers in the early 1300s, clogs quickly shook off their practical connotations. Fast forward to the 1970s – the era of disco dancing – and the wooden heels became the party shoe of choice for celebrities and pop stars alike: Jane Birkin, Bianca Jagger and ABBA were all fans. Worn sans socks, clogs were (and still are) the perfect accompaniment to flared pants, boho maxi dresses and structured trouser suits. Thirty years on and the 2000s ‘ugly’ shoe trend brought with it another clog renaissance, and with all things Noughties (we’re talking denim maxi skirts, baby tees and cargo pants) making a comeback in 2023, it’s hardly surprising these shoes have returned to our radar.
But the Y2k renaissance isn’t the only reason for this shoe’s resurgence, lockdown is probably also to thank for our recent practical, uber comfortable footwear choices. We were all living in sliders, the much-coveted Birkenstock Bostons and even – miraculously – the ugly-turned-street cool Crocs during that unprecedented time. And when life finally went back to normal, it seems old habits die hard. However, this year the clog is more sexy than sensible thanks to the addition of platform heels, studded leather and statement buckles to add a touch of flare.
Whether you’re into sculptural styles, traditional leather pieces, or are just here for the comfy slippers, keep scrolling to see ELLE UK’s edit of the best clogs for women to shop now.
If you’re really feeling the 1970s fashion renaissance this season, clogs are the only shoes to be seen in. Isabel Marant stays faithful to the retro style with this chunky design that features studded brick-red leather and a classic conical heel. Take yours from summer into autumn by simply switching milkmaid dresses for wide-leg trousers and turtleneck knits.

Trust Saint Laurent to bring a modern twist to the traditional clog design – we love how the brand has switched out wood for a durable rubber sole and repurposed the signature statement buckle from YSL’s matching Le Mallion bag.
The snaffle hardware on Boden’s soft suede style makes these clogs look designer. While the warm brown shade lends itself to boho inspired looks (think: maxi dresses and peasant blouses), these shoes are also available in a black leather for smarter occasions.

Known for its contemporary take on traditional cowboy boots, Penelope Chilvers is the brand loved by A-listers including Rihanna, Alexa Chung and even the Princess of Wales. These timeless black clogs have a cool equestrian feel thanks to the horsebit buckle and stud detailing.
Scandi-brand Arket has paid homage to the traditional Dutch shoe with this cream slip-on design. Keep styling simple and wear yours with tonal looks this summer.
A bold-printed clog lends itself to fancier looks, but we think Reformation’s Rayna style would look seriously cool dressed down with baggy jeans and a simple white tee. Just look to forever style icon Jane Birkin if you’re lacking style inspiration.

The beauty of a clog is that you can simply slip it on to instantly elevate even the most basic of outfits. We love the versatile black leather on Charles & Keith’s Gabine shoe, but this style is also available in cream, tan and a 1990s-inspired patchwork denim.
Loved for its timeless ready-to-wear collections and muted colour palettes, Fillipa K is the cool-girl brand to know in 2023. The perfect compromise of both clog and mule, this chunky style is defined by its supple suede upper and block wooden heel.

We couldn’t do a clog round up without including Birkenstock’s Boston clogs. Although they were first introduced back in 1977, you’ll probably recognise them as the shoe that’s been all over Instagram since lockdown. Three years later and it’s still a struggle to get your hands on a pair of these iconic suede slippers. Luckily, we’ve found a staple tan pair on Net-a-porter. So now the only question is: to sock or not to sock?
For a more directional take on Crocs, look to & Other Stories. We love how these black slippers combine the durability of rubber shoes with the sleek silhouette of a classic clog. Wear yours as part of casual weekend looks or elevate them for the office with tailored shirts and cropped cigarette pants.
